Collecting and treating sewage means improving environmental conditions to help ecosystem recovery

More than 200 billion liters of sewage treated in 2021, equivalent to 80,000 Olympic pools

Recovery of the Lagoa de Araruama, in the Região dos Lagos (lakes region) in Rio de Janeiro, which in 2021 recorded:

Record Harvest of Fish

Species such as carapeba and perumbeba were found once again in large quantities, according to the region’s fishermen’s association

Seahorses returned to inhabit the lagoon

Hundreds of animals have been cataloged since then via the Seahorses Project

Resumption of sports championships

Like Windsurfing and Swim Crossing

The largest hypersaline lagoon in the world was in an advanced state of environmental degradation, as raw sewage had been dumped directly into the lagoon

The responsible use and the preservation of water resources are also pillars of our work.

In 2021, we reduced the rate of water losses, meaning that 39 billion liters of water were saved, enough to supply 970,000 people for a year

This is evidence of how we contribute positively to the climate agenda

OUR GOAL

To reduce the specific energy consumption (kWh/m³) by 15% in the treatment and distribution of water and in the collection and treatment of sewage by 2030

• 94% of the energy consumed in the Aegea group comes from renewable sources

Greenhouse Gas Emissions:

  • In 2021, we made our first GEE inventory with the support of a specialized consulting firm
  • In 2022, we have been listed in the Brazilian GHG Program
  • Next steps: ensure the inventory of emissions and obtain the Gold seal in the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program

Circular economy:

  • Initiatives for the reuse and reduction of the volume of sludge disposed in landfills
  • Transforming sludge into fertilizer in Águas do Mirante by adding a structuring material (residue from tree pruning and grass cutting done in the city) and nitrogen
  • Transforming sludge into compost at Ambiental Metrosul by using the “plots” method or mixing the sludge with soil and sawdust/pruning residue
  • Reusing sludge in the manufacturing of bricks at the Santa Catarina units

Next steps include the completion of feasibility studies and expanding these projects to other units of the group

Water availability and security

We are active in regions served by major water sources like the Rio Negro (State of Amazonas), the Guarani Aquifer (State of Mato Grosso do Sul) and the Lagoa de Jurtunaíba (State of Rio de Janeiro), and we maintain a Water Security Plan to guarantee supply in the regions where we operate:

  • Supervision of the volume and capacity of the springs
  • Operational Risk Matrix
  • Geophysical studies conducted to detect viable points for groundwater abstraction
  • Investments in operational safety, such as basin transposition and water well digging
  • Weather forecasts for the next 30 years based on historical statistics and planning of interventions needed to ensure water security
